CHICAGO!

It's been so long, and it felt so right. 20 bands (give or take), incredible food, smiling faces, and more incredible food. The bands were playing a 2 day festival celebrating the release of this, it got pretty serious.

We left town right after I got off work. After a lengthy drive filled with much napping, a detour, routine border searching, Meat Loaf singalongs, and red bull cola, we arrived in the windy city. As it was only 8am, I was forced to walk around a bit before the almighty Chicago Diner was open and I could get down on some chow.

Even though I have a new found hatred of Cubs fans after the douchebaggery witnessed on Clark St. this weekend, it sure is pretty to look at.

After an hour and a half of intense waiting, the Chicago Diner finally opened. The breakfast is wonderful. This is the "Monte Cristo", French toast sandwich with ham and cheese (vegan friendly). Not pictured is the milkshake I destroyed before it could be blogged. Oops!

After a full day of hanging out and shopping, we caught the first onslaught of bands of the weekend. Poison Planet got the party cracking, of course I didn't take any pictures of them.

The Hope Conspiracy brought it as per usual. New EP out soon, get your ass ready to be kicked.

After not snapping more pictures of Disnihil and Converge, I got hungry and rolled deep with a crew around the corner to Sultan's. Top 5 falafel sandwiches in North America, easy. Weird that they sold out of spinach pies and rice/lentils when there is a show a block away. Should have gone earlier, bummer.

For some reason we thought ice cream would be a good idea afterwards, and it was! I Cream is a crazy place where you pick your base (ice cream, soy ice cream, frozen yogurt.. etc), flavour, colour, and toppings. Then they freeze it right there with liquid frickin nitrogen. Who knew the future would be right now and crazy delicious? I Cream did, and now I do too.

Ok, this is some next level stuff right here. Tired of dropping serious coin on a small ass pack of gelatin free mashmallows? I know I am, and Chicago Soy Dairy has come up with the ultimate solution. I can't wait until I can get a case or 6 shipped up to me. Beyond delicious.

Also picked up a few packages of their soy cheese "Teese". Experimented with it last night and turned out extremely well (more on that soon).

A snippet of the mayhem that was Unbroken's set. People were stage diving like crazy, a dude went on stage and kissed the singer on the cheek mid song, I even saw a girl crying... but that was because she broke her arm. No big deal.

Super Vacation Fun Time! (Part 1)

I took a much needed vacation last week. Planned around the "This Is Hardcore" festival in Philadelphia, I also hung out in Washington, DC and Baltimore.

Here are some pics from the heart of Babylon.

This is my boy Josh from Minneapolis. He saved me from a 4 hour layover at the airport, couldn't ask for a more legit favour on a lengthy trip. Not pictured is the brunch we whipped up on a cookie sheet ON his stove due to a lack of frying pans in his place.

This is my friend Rachel, whom I stayed with in Alexandria (Virginia suburb of Washington, DC).

Hit up this tiny joint a few miles away, pretty dope.

The next day started off right with a trip to my favourite (easily) breakfast joint, Waffle House.

Golden Waffle with Hashbrowns (smothered, covered, and peppered).

Rachel had to work later on, so I hung out at a local mall for a few hours. Saw Pineapple Express, it ruled. We drove into DC when she was off work, and hit up Soul Veg. For those not in the know, SV is an all vegan soul food restaurant. They have locations in Chicago, Atlanta, and in the District. If you go to any of those cities, do your taste buds a solid and get into some food for the soul.

I don't know which is more hilarious: what the sign says, or the fact that such a sign was deemed necessary. Of course I pissed there.

After scarfing down our grub, we made a break for Philadelphia (2.5 hours give or take) so we could get a decent sleep and be ready for the fest the next morning.

Got to the fest late, but of course it hadn't started yet, so we took a trip to the best convenience store chain of all time, Wawa.

Best iced tea is in Pennsylvania. Fact. This stuff and Turkey Hill, are what dreams are made of.

The next day we aimed to miss even more shitty bands by going sightseeing. This ended up working out extremely well.

It seems like everyone is moving away. Monday morning we say a heart felt "smell you later" to Ben, as he leaves for Toronto to go to school. Since I leave for vacation tomorrow, it was decided that Ben and I would enjoy a nice gourmet meal together tonight. Who better to cook a perfect feast than everyone's favourite vegan chef, Beeps.

This show was so fun, 3 of my favourite current bands (The Hope Conspiracy, Ceremony, Lewd Acts) in a pretty sweet venue with low rafters to swing on. Definitely got taken out by some huge dudes during these opening songs, but what can you do.

Learning of a friend passing is the worst possible news. Atip was a friend of mine that I met through my ex-girlfriend in San Diego. He was riding his bike home from work on Thursday night and was hit by a car. I didn't know him as well as I would have liked, but it seriously bums me out that I will never get to hang out with him again.

"Community members will lock up a "Ghost Bike" to remember Atip's life, which was unfairly taken from him, his family, friends, and this community. This will be the first Ghost Bike we know of in San Diego. Let's work together to make sure it's the last."

Huge nostalgia fest this weekend. Moving sale at my Mom's house that my family lived in since I was 3 months old. No pics, but I did rescue a few cool things (Winnipeg Jets playoff noise maker) and made enough to buy myself a couple slurpees.

My cousin Mel is moving to Australia at the end of the week, goodbye party @ The King's Head. We used to share pieces of cake at birthdays. I got the icing, she got the cake. We were both stoked.

I've been getting a few more people into LOST lately, and the best part is watching their reactions as crazy stuff happens. Start of season 2.

Went out for dinner with my literal bro, thought we would try a new mexican joint called Don Pedro. It was ok, not to toot my own horn, but I can make better burritos at home and I think I will next time. Note for veg heads: Beans are lard free, but the rice has chicken broth in it. Just a heads up.

California Burrito. So many beans, probably not the best choice for a first date.

Fried Ice Cream. I was super stoked when I saw this on the menu as I hadn't had any since Chi Chi's closed down who knows how long ago. Kind of a let down, but it is what it is.

Here's one smiling face that wasn't a let down. Ari holding down the dishes, afro pick and all.

Went to check out a few metal bands at the Albert afterwards, and they did not disappoint. Besiege was on a serious Thrash tip. They covered VIO-LENCE, and much moshing ensued.

Evil Survives absolutely floored me, this band is going to go places.

This may or may not have been serious. I guess you'll never know.

Dinner date with Sarde!

Met up with this lovely lady at Miyabi. New joint to me, but not to the sushi scene. I sat back and relaxed and she ordered for both of us.

After a brief appetizer round, the craziness started. I can't remember what all the rolls are, but I'm sure with a trip to the veg section of the menu, you will be pleasantly suprised.

Crucial campfire. I hate white rabbits.

One of the best parts of a good bromance is eating a nice meal. Falafel Breakfast @ Falafel Place (new spot on corydon between harrow and wilton). Easily the best breakfast spot in the city. The only complaints I have heard are about how busy it gets on weekends after church/synagogue, and how the owner asks people if they are done sometimes. Both of which can be avoided if you go before 11 or after 2, and are not a complete dipshit loser. Seriously, if you want to hang out and drink coffee after your meal go to a coffee shop. Don't sit at a busy restaurant when there is a huge line out the door, that's just a straight up dick move. End rant, sorry.

For the longest time I couldn't stand this band. All I kept thinking about was how bummed I was that No Warning weren't playing shows anymore. I went to this show for the opening bands (Blacklisted, Down To Nothing, Sinking Ships, Shipwreck), but left a fan. Any time I hear kids singing along over the music I get stoked. And the rest is history.

Do you like cupcakes? I know I do, and my main man Beeps loves to bake 'em. He is starting to sell his vegan creations at various shows in the city, and they are all delicious. This particular version is a chai cupcake with a vanilla bean "butter" creme icing (if i'm not mistaken).

On a not so vegan note, mac 'n cheese for 7. Hailed as "the best ever" by 6 of the 7, the 7th was pretty drunk and probably said some things he didn't mean. Pictures taken less than 3 minutes apart.

During the break between seasons 3 and 4 of the greatest show on television (LOST), ABC teamed up with Verizon Wireless and put out 13 mini-episodes called "Missing Pieces" to download with your mobile phone. Nothing too crazy was revealed but there are a few things you pick up on that keep things interesting.

Dani from Toronto came along!

This guy showed up. Note the size comparison to the shifter. This bad boy was a litre of energy and gave me the shakes.

After the Minneapolis show we rolled to Pizza Luce to get some eats. Split meal of "chicken" parmigiana and pesto "turkey" sandwiches. Both were incredible as you can imagine.

Breakfast at the Triple Rock was in order the next day (as it should be when in Minneapolis). This is the "Mother Trucker". Two fried eggs over a mountain of hash browns covered with cheese and veggies. Yum Yum.

The Stage gave out 30 seconds into the set. No big deal.

The boys just loaded their gear off the stage, stage was taken apart, show went on.

Pretty much a brand new local band featuring a bunch of dudes not so new to the local punk/hardcore scene. Heavy on the Integrity influence, which is a good thing.

Someone could get lost in those eyes.

Great band, I always forget how good they are until I see them play out. Definitely don't like god too much ha.
